Senator Isah Misau, who represents Bauchi Central senatorial district at the Senate, has been dragged to court over the N120 billion bribery and other allegations he leveled against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris.
Nigerian government through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, filed two separate sets of charges on Tuesday against the Senator.
One of the charges filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and marked FCT/HC/CR/345/2017, was sequel to a running battle between Misau, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, and IGP Idris.
In the case the Federal Government preferred against Misau a five-count charge bordering on making “injurious falsehood” against Idris and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) following various allegations of corruption he leveled against them in the media.
Among the allegations by Misau which government considered as injurious to the IGP and the NPF was the claim by Misau that police officers allegedly paid as much as N2.5 million to get special promotion and posting through the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Also is the claim by the lawmaker of IGP’s alleged act of diverting money meant for the purchase of Armoured Personnel Carriers, Sport Utility Vehicles and other exotic cars as well as IGPs posting of almost half of his Nupe people as mobile commanders in the country.
The prosecutor argued that Misau claims were false, and were offences contrary to Section 393(1) of the Penal Code.
The Federal Government in another suit marked FHC/ABJ/CR/170/2017, preferred a seven-count charge against Misau, accusing him of making and “uttering” false documents comprising affidavits, statutory declaration of age deposed to at FCT High Court and the Bauchi State Health Management Board Birth Certificate, which he allegedly submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission in 2011 and 2014.
The prosecutor said that the offences in the seven counts were contrary to Section (1)(2)(c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under the same section of the Act.
Assistant Chief State Counsel, Mr. Aminu Alilu, from the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, the Federal Ministry of Justice, signed the two sets of charges on behalf of the AGF.
