WTTC 2018: Nigeria’s team thump Spain, to play Slovakia in Q’final

Nigeria’s table tennis team defeated Spain 3-1 in the round of 16 stage to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Slovakia at the ongoing Liebherr World Team Table Tennis (WTTC) Championships in Halmstad, Sweden.

Aruna Quadri fought back from a set down to beat Carlos Machado 3-1, before Spain’s Alvaro Robles leveled both sides by defeating Segun Toriola in three straight sets.

Bode Abiodun put Nigeria ahead again by beating Cantero Jesus 3-0, and Aruna sealed the victory with a 3-1 win over Alvaro Robles.

Nigeria had beaten Argentina 3-1 in their first game in the competition; they also defeated Turkey 3-0 before falling to their only defeat in the group stages to Slovakia.

They however bounced back to see off Bulgaria 3-0 before also thrashing Australia 3-0 to reach the round of 16.

The Nigerian team will now face Slovakia in the quarter-final game on Friday.

If Nigeria are able to win Slovakia, they will face either Italy or Hungary in the semi-finals.
