The Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has described as unthinkable how monies running into several billions will be discovered without disclosures of their real owners.
The Bishop who said he felt demoralised and humiliated as a Nigerian, urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to be less dramatic in carrying out their assigned duties so that it does not further violate the sensibilities of Nigerians.
Kukah stated this when he spoke at the national anti-money laundering / counter-financing of terrorism sensitisation seminar organised by the Inter-governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West
Africa, GIABA, in Kaduna.
“I feel more demoralized and very humiliated as a Nigerian but the confusion is that we are dealing with monies that are of the size of budget of some African states.
“I think it’s unthinkable that we are having such money running into billions of naira and we don’t know who owned such monies. Frankly, if I were a foreigner, my respect for Nigeria will dwindle seriously.
“Even me as a Nigerian, I feel quite violated and I don’t really know if all this theatre is the best way to go. I think the agencies concerned should have less dramatic but effective way of telling us the work they are doing, rather than this endless washing of linen whose owners we don’t know. It’s not helping the fight,” the Bishop said.
Meanwhile, a former deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Chris Ekpeyong, has dubbed as a national disgrace and embarrassment the fact that the huge amounts of cash discovered at various locations by then EFCC cannot be traced to anybody.
He said, “As far as I am concerned, it is embarrassing to Nigeria and indeed Africa as a whole, even as we claim to be the giant of Africa.
“The EFCC has not told Nigerians that the recovered cash belongs to anybody. All we were told was that cash was discovered at the airport, Balogun Market in Lagos and a residential building. What a national
disgrace”. Ekpeyong stated this in Uyo.
